I loved the way Penny used functionality as a feature, with shorts that rolled down into trousers, and with hoods as a key theme of the collection - she explains it best herself, so please check out the Q & A below the images. It was also great to see some men's clothes and male models! Sometimes I feel like the boys miss out in the fashion stakes. Congratulations, Penny!

What inspired your graduating collection, and/or your designs in general?
As a designer my interest lies in the relationship between the wearer and the clothing. I have always been fascinated with subcultures, particularly the way in which they are able to communicate their ideas and beliefs to a wider community, through their clothing. I enjoy that within fashion and design we can create our own worlds to escape to, a place where we don’t always have to understand or explain.

With the use of transformation and interaction I have produced innovative garments that allows the wearer to be involved with the garment at a greater level than regular designs, as well as creating a garment that has multiple styles. The use of transformation in design increase practicality and visual effect along with emotive fabrics and techniques within the designs. This engages the wearer positively with their clothing and encourages the wearer to play a part in the creation of their clothing allowing them to value and appreciate the detail behind what they are wearing. In essence, make it their own.

Why did you decide to pursue fashion design?
It’s hard to say where the idea of fashion design came from. As a child I grew up on a farm so I was hardly surrounded by fashion. I believe it all started in yr 8 after one textiles class, in truth it was the only class I enjoyed, and I have never stopped loving it. It very important to me that I enjoy what I am doing in life as well as believing in my self.

What music are you listening to right now?
I have a great love for all music - old, new, classical. When I am designing I often listen to Mozart, but at the moment I have Neil Diamond playing in the background. The only music I cannot stand ironically is country music; I’m just not a fan at all.

What are your plans for the future, now that you’ve graduated?
Now that I have graduated I wish to get as much experience in the industry as possible. I hope to work in costume design for a few years and then start my own label but I believe there is so much to experience before that happens. As a start I am off to India over Easter next year to explore their amazing textiles and detail in their fabrics.
Turned out I knew a girl (Angela Menz) who knew a guy (Anthony Capon) who was showing at RAFW as part of his prize for winning the 2009 series of Project Runway Australia, and I was to go along to help out backstage!!(!!!)!!

After several months of planning, attempting to alter grey marl track pants to look like Alexander Wang, manically scouring op shops and saying ‘I have nothing to wear!’ about 8375409248657 times, I eventually borrowed a vest designed by my friend Lisa Twomey. Lisa creates amazing garments from vintage and recycled materials, and the vest I borrowed was based on an old leather waistcoat with military buttons; Lisa added shoulder pads draped in chains, peacock feathers, and created a beautiful patchwork on the back from pieces of velvet, lace, gold chord, and other unique fabrics. It was an honour to wear it, thank you so much Lisa!

So. It was the night before the big day. All was going according to plan. I had something to wear. I had my bags packed. I set my alarm for six a.m. and drifted off into a sound sleep and woke... with the plague.

Ok, really I just had a bad cold, but I spent the entire bus trip to Sydney with tissues shoved up my nose (v unfashionable) and my cowl scarf pulled over my face, firstly to hide the tissue scenario and secondly to try and avoid infecting my bus buddy Angela. We began calling it my ‘shroud’, but later realised that they actually put shrouds on dead people so it probably wasn’t the choicest word.

So while Angela went to explore China town and collect our friend Mimi from the bus station (she was arriving a few hours after us) I was sleeping in our hotel room and desperately willing myself to get better for the next day. I couldn’t believe this was happening to me!! It was my fashion week debut (of sorts) and I would have a sore red nose and a croaky voice, not to mention that I felt like crap! The girls came back at around 11pm, and when they saw how miserable I was they made a late night trek to Coles to buy me Lemsip and Vitamin C and oranges and Butter Menthols and anything else that might help me get better.

The next morning I woke up feeling much better, and I dosed myself up on cold and flu tablets and set to work getting dressed. In the end I wore Ang’s skull pendant, she wore my earrings, we all wore Mimi’s hair spray – I think every beauty product imaginable could be found in our hotel room that day. I distinctly remember Ang saying ‘I have eyebrow product if anybody needs it’.

Looking back, that is what I remember the most about my Fashion Week experience – if you needed something, someone would lend it to you, or at least help you find it, whether it was the gorgeous vest from Lisa, Lemsip from Coles, eyebrow product from Ang, or black underwear for Anthony’s models. That was our next task. The models had no underwear.

We met Anthony and his friends Petrina and Greg at Circular Quay, and while the rest of us stood and gaped at the likes of Susie Bubble heading in to the morning shows, Angela ran off and bought several pairs of black jockeys. But while that crisis was averted, another one had arisen – the airline had lost one of Anthony’s bags which contained most of his headpieces!!

There was nothing we could do except repeatedly check in with the airline, so we lugged the bags upstairs and started to unpack. After that I can’t really remember all that much until the end of the show. It was several months ago but also I think I just got really, really stressed (so I hate to think how Anthony felt)! We were sharing models with other designers which meant we were all packed in backstage together, and there were several shit fights over irons and steamers, and then Mimi and I had to run off and pack Anthony’s gift bags, and then I was trying on Anthony’s ‘Ballio’ headpiece and it got stuck in my hair, and every time I tried to take a photo someone would scream at me ‘BLACK SAFETY PINS!!!! WE NEEEEED BLAAAACK SAFFFFEETTYY PINNNNS!!!’
We saw Alyssa Sutherland, the RAFW ambassador – she had come to watch Anthony’s show and she came backstage to say hello, and she absolutely TOWERED above all the other models! Aussie Vogue editor Kirstie Clements was also standing near me at one point but I didn’t realise and *gasp!* apparently she had stray threads hanging off her jacket. I didn’t see it! All I know is what I was told.
After the show we hastily packed up and went to the bar. Angela, Mimi and I got our make-up done at the MAC make-up bar, and given that there was no food to be found anywhere in the building (bloody starving fashion types), we quickly got a bit tipsy on free champagne. At some point while we were sitting there (drunk), Alex Perry walked past. The day before he’d presented his all-singing, all-dancing, multimillion dollar runway show at Fox Studios, to more than a thousand guests.
In the end Anthony’s collection was quite well-received by the Australian press, although unfortunately most coverage tended to focus on the fact that he sent out men in skirts (SMH journo Richard Jinman described it as ‘transvestite grim reaper’) rather than his magnificent sculptural jackets or metallic and plastic detailing. But as Petrina pointed out when we were having schnitties and beer at the pub later on, ‘if everyone liked it, you’d be Alex fucking Perry’.

Check out Anthony's blog and the official looks from his RAFW collection, 'Egyptian Super Heroes', here.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3146964349046405045.post-14903205016658327992010-12-24T19:49:00.000+11:002010-12-24T22:39:52.744+11:00Steel Me AwayA few weeks ago I went to the CIT graduating fashion parade, an annual event showcasing the work of CIT Bachelor of Design (Fashion Design) students. This year's event was titled 'Archetype 10', and the event was the talk of the town, partly because this is fashion-starved Canberra, but mostly because it was a fantastic event. Not only were the clothes incredibly interesting and diverse, the presentation was seamless. According to all reports, it went more smoothly than most RAFW shows, so a big congratulations is in order for all the graduating students for being not only talented, but also organised and efficient!

One of the stand-out designers for me was Laura Steel, who presented her label 'Steel Me Away' (I always enjoy a clever pun on a surname!). Laura's collection was playful and irreverent, at the same time showcasing excellent tailoring in her signature sculptural frills. The incorporation of mesh into her garments added a point of interest; there was a fantastic moment where one of her models turned at the end of the runway to reveal a touch of derriere that was exposed by a mesh strip, and half the crowd gasped in surprise.

Laura has kindly answered a few questions and provided me with some photos of her graduating collection to share with you. I'm sure you'll be very impressed, as I was, with how polished and professional they are! Over the next few weeks I hope to showcase a few of my favourite designers from the parade, so be sure to keep in touch!

Oh, and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Love,

KQ

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic95RHlbAJ40XbEaqLJhvVvDfqsPp4djkiH9HqcRStnBUIt7rK8tVaH5Z8s8KaSb_tIuu50VdJXEzgTBDLSgN4Hb0PS-9rbFBaSU2ydZ3uMfjAvf9LnDOKk8zR-Tu1tZcou2LHCV03wMU/s400/Steel+Me+Away+1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5554202224198937874" />

What inspired your graduating collection?
My graduating collection 'Hit Me With Music...' was inspired by the idea of memory and nostalgia, and the things that trigger them. I specifically looked into how music triggered my memories, and listened to old records and tapes from my childhood (Bob Marley, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Blues Brothers - just a few), as well as taking inspiration from patterns of old curtains and floor coverings to design and print my own fabrics.

How would you describe your graduating collection?
My graduating collection is very confident and loud. The intent was to translate a 'old' inspiration, into a contemporary context that was quite modern and out there without the final designs looking dated. The contrast of fabrics - sheers and solids - is quite interesting, and gives the collection a bit of a rock edge.

Which designers do you admire?
Earlier this year I went on work experience with the label 'State of Georgia' in Bali. Georgia Hall was great, she has no formal training, but has established this amazing label; she designs her own fabrics and prints as well as designing all the collections. It opened my eyes to what the industry is like, and got me excited about graduating and getting myself out there. Getting to actually meet Georgia and see how a designer works in the real world was biggest benefit for me, it was kind of like a VIP pass, you know, getting to see the behind the scenes stuff.

What are you reading right now?
I haven't really had time to get into a good book in a while, but am always into music magazines, I cant live without Rolling Stone
and Q.

What’s on the cards for the future, now that you’ve graduated?
Now that I've graduated Im just taking some time out. I want to look into starting my own label in the next couple of years, and I plan on looking into the business opportunities that are out there and being really well informed before I jump straight into it! I’m really excited to get started and to run my own label, it’s something I've wanted to do the whole time I've been studying and since graduating it’s something I feel is completely and utterly achievable.

<img style="display:block; We were all squished into the Canberra Centre store (which is beautiful but not particularly large) and I have to say, I haven’t seen so many well-dressed Canberrans in the same place since itrip iskip’s ‘Grass Stains’ birthday celebration last year. Of course, it was a totally different style to the indie crowd that frequents itrip, but there was still the same rock n roll, artfully dishevelled nonchalance that indie kids cultivate and Sass & Bide is famous for. There were lots of wonderful shades of lipstick – I recognised MAC’s ‘Snob’ and ‘New York Apple’ doing the rounds – and lots of bright orange everywhere, both in Sass & Bide’s new resort collection and on the labels of the Veuve Clicquot (I probably had a bit too much – you have to seize expensive champagne opportunities as you find them!).

My favourite thing about Sass & Bide at the moment (and there are so many things to love!) is what they call ‘Sass & Bide exclusive clear rocket dome studding’. They’re these studs that look like mini icicles and they adorn the shoulders and waistbands of several pieces, giving them a subtle sense of ferocity. Check them out on ‘The Persuader’ skirt.

We also met one of the founders of the Sass & Bide, the lovely Sarah-Jane Clark. Clark and business partner Heidi Middleton began the label in 1999, selling jeans at a stall at London’s Portobello markets, and since then the label has become one of Australian fashion’s biggest success stories, with Sass & Bide now a multi-million dollar global company. As a result, Clark and Middleton took out the 2010 Veuve Cliquot Business Woman Award, which is awarded annually in celebration of women’s business achievements internationally (and that explains why there was so much Veuve available at the party). It’s not hard to see how Clark achieved such success, because not only is she creative and talented and an excellent businesswoman, she was also extremely nice!

So a very BIG thank you to Angela Menz for inviting me along to the Sass & Bide party as her guest!! You’ve probably heard she won the Fashions on the Field at the Canberra Cup last Sunday – but more on that later!

Until next time (and I promise I won’t leave it months before I write again) –

KQUnknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3146964349046405045.post-12768309922786465442010-03-25T10:09:00.000+11:002010-03-25T17:54:20.881+11:002 by Lyn and Tony<img style="display:block; In the episode ‘The Real Me’ Carrie gets invited to participate in a charity fashion show, so you can imagine my surprise – and the ensuing delusions about my future with Mr Big and a closet full of Manolos – when my friend Megan asked me to model in a fashion show for Pink Inc boutique.

Like Carrie, I was pretty anxious about being out there with actual models – but it in the end it was just fabulous to be able to wear Akira, Zambesi, Breathless and Vivienne Westwood! (If I only I were a foot taller and seven kilos lighter!)

There were even jewelled panties involved – just like in SATC! – but thankfully I didn’t have to wear them!

I only got a few snaps myself, but there were a bunch of photographers there, so hopefully I’ll be able to get hold of a few more photos to post.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3146964349046405045.post-3853145792815578002010-01-28T18:13:00.000+11:002010-01-30T00:33:03.177+11:00I’ll Meet You There in the Summertime<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIY1kQaMI9UoNSPvP9P6anfxFxWEBAvhA69FJcxksCuSrgPodBDOSQ2xNKsPG5mZsQ2-UlxxymLe2Qzwah-qzBgnYmoSlfaq7ofgVCGdG1N-4AXekh4CLFtM_V0aUxIDSpgDsjPtrZ8FU/s320/summer+09-10+104.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5432128525786562370" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_H9pRPicrRCBriFew5xNoCyaAh9cNJ8S9prKbFLnNIvKQTlij7yAcHT-L1-IhoUbFheULliptYWj5rUCUzUnOpMkbSNEHIlO0CZLKM5H2CgYT05xWhsP_r1JaH6c4Il92gyLNiakCCo0/s320/summer+09-10+124.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5432128512733869362" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFBgzPcoppmLVt6nmLRcDXSqNSww91ZYggmpcPD62LqfsDPnvK6NSzdq6zEPJyhNH_GqBWhykGQSsovoUS0l0dASlbVPb07vXWtRDo5aQX_uK6Db-aPn9RhZf05-0f1iIlnQ9q4mwFPrw/s320/summer+09-10+229.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5432128503255248626" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcJwGgknI5ofVhpkEEFY0p-G27Mp7_YMh2by7bP4vLXK6gSFESuLV6vjAFx55n3u0NwJwgsttmIoFfKRXq_rIOkQnuBpoIrni_oeRLlzeWdxTZ-JVUq_vGqpYoT3xZTIZE2zgb_EWkdUY/s320/summer+09-10+284.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5432128488835931842" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOZAsuUgjzE_s-NN1aGQpi8o9CL5g5howTGEq85PF91PcTAbE4-Q_wu137bwbxI3JaR2gMEZx9-tfUxOim79MbXBlLkMyvL4rq19YrDGHBHQJulBfTaBGNE0NjQgMn-7C-jb0MRjxluVY/s320/summer+09-10+288.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5432128481103546370" />

Summer means tie-dye, hot chips and sunburn. It means afternoon rain storms and sleepless nights under mosquito nets. Salt-stringy hair and pale denim. And best of all, road trips.

I did a couple down to the coast during this summer, and discovered some amazing little shops on the way. Firstly there was Winch Books in Bungendore – your genuine, old-school, ramshackle book shop. Think Black Books but with charming (rather than terrifying) staff. I found some great old poetry books, and I’m sure there were some fantastic hidden treasures there – hidden being the operative word, because you’d definitely need to look for them!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNyUaCs5GMDgyN0O_Cv3X0grVbkLPow-XY_MkqBkxCT7R4fnsW9N6O8nlI-VHI_043STazkyTZJjGAcvYwcPrVjjznFoVuXX-VzcFiPwB-iIu2Fep3Q64MKZGqMGvHI2nj9aYYKgoGPk4/s320/coast+trip+with+zoya+and+melissa+015.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431705269382638146" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinAcbFjh2woPtDxA0PTaKA1nALehNLtYO3ThBHPyl9jAaDQ2bAEFg8PVxD33_RfOT6MPrlQbvn8XxkN-AFBc2Neo-NtPB_6QG9jrd6h94cz_t_yfG9gUIw4DX7Lwouq0e4RlhSW3O46to/s320/coast+trip+with+zoya+and+melissa+014.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431705263192230578" />

Up the road was a leather shop, so enticing it managed to draw in even my strictest animal-loving vegetarian friends. There were also new and vintage leather bags, fox tails, kangaroo skins, cow skins, tooled leather bags and wallets, and for some reason, a bunch of bowler and top hats – overall the perfect mix of quirky and cute.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvV_VScfYwGchuvKsIHWAaUl1_c7TqnWVlpVUZ02znQaXf9axS0CzK03uX-1TAheyMKkX4aURfIsLE8OItpbefqlmDIHk2P6tALA_zkGJKskP1jQM60pXhVl_fMf_kayZ-V3B5-XRMQ30/s320/coast+trip+with+zoya+and+melissa+006.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431744196041714258" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTeVrrmoAnhNQrZO0Bs8UTPhMxVotzrZSIDMyK6HxYpv_4yEIgrCLFlBQjDt5Eoy7n7DzbGp8FMQFYa2AXn00zd0Lq25ugku5c1a5RRafvgFjqRY350z6sIDzbgG7ExLVU68wYdHG52Nc/s320/coast+trip+with+zoya+and+melissa+005.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431744189874576914" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUrf-suKbKhMVheRywj2YC6uQnd6OhezGPkIo6Gxn-M1ELpQWlPuPODDv-ieGi9J2vDsbTpK-whw5ubOd-PYkXoxlpr8o9pCyGlbX3bp2AQaqdydNO24Y8JzMvgY5RTnj16O4AFmYZq70/s320/coast+trip+with+zoya+and+melissa+003.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431744181611240834" />

Then about 40 minutes away in Braidwood we visited a shop a friend had told me about called Hoola Hoop, which sells vintage and rockabilly-style clothes and accessories. This post was originally going to be a celebration of the shoulderpad trend - and it still is - but it took Diz and I so long to find a time to do it that it is somewhat out of context, shot in my backyard on a blazing summer day. Nonetheless, I am a fan of the power shoulder anywhere, any time - even against red brick at midday. I hope you enjoy the pics - and big love and thanks to Diz (I think she bears a striking resemblance to it-girl Georgia Jagger, don't you agree?).

<img style="display:block; I was good last year too, and I have to say that the knitting needles and steering wheel cover I received on Christmas morning really didn’t cut it present-wise. So I have provided a comprehensive list of very affordable (ahem) items to assist you in your duties this year, with accompanying images to avoid any confusion. I figure you use the internet now – chimneys and all that are so last century.

* PRADA LEATHER WADERS – I don’t know why I want them but I do. Fashionation described them as ‘disgusting’ – but what else is a fashionista going to wear when she goes digging for crabs?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYFFqZRxpEpizVmShcPgENMAjtnwNt8oD7TV1s0HPYwFSb-_v8OGmzYroZzZ-peaMXCZ0U0JGAAGn4rk0t-2JWvJeyjIsN0f6nlpIxySfjPCQU5jFb4DsSYzQTp8yrc4s0XwYHmkHZxy0/s320/prada+waders.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5417502030822387506" />

* BALMAIN MILITARY-DETAIL SHOULDER-PADDED JACKET – American revolution meets Margaret Thatcher meets fabulous. Gimme.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 218px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV-s72RqyBBY0wUdOppOix4tpewspaPlj-YNAu37tzje0a6kLspSRT12AHs0BNsOQysrvfUYHz4fnYNo6ZW7Im_UsZjOPmwhNSF9x4E-2JJuGl7g1Gjk5zCPRgG7AdhTl9M1kKXVOR620/s320/rihanna+shoulderpads.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5417502246595400898" />

* RAY BAN CLUBMASTERS – Ray Ban expects to have sold 15 million of these frames by 2010. They’ve been seen on the likes of Robert Pattinson, Beyonce, Allison Mossheart of The Kills and The Dead Weather, and Gossip Girl’s Ed Westwick.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 314px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhY0qoA3G3YIT0aa13PXmFbSuSwnKTNckDM1EemhFgJKrlc4cU5k459pEqWcWQnEkw_adZXmgxKI5Wm62e5X9h5gX69_pWlLfppcpqWQz8DnExlTep9ikE0ZtqsXmD__n4bIJyyoG-_pus/s320/clubmasters.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5417503167913348002" />

* BURBERRY PRORSUM GOLD MINIDRESS – although the silver short-sleeved jacket pictured would be equally acceptable. She writes beautiful, fantastical stories and – wait a minute – makes beautiful, fantastical jewellery too! Danni finds her inspiration in “little stories a child makes up as they play in the garden, and dream. There are princesses, creepy crawlies and flowers, tea sets, mythical creatures and even voodoo dolls! All the things that fill up the imagination.” I am absolutely in love with her piece ‘The Anatomical Heart’, and eagerly awaiting the arrival of mine in her next shipment!

How would you describe your work?

Femininely delicate and a very simple, organic aesthetic. My current range, "A Handful of Memories" is a series of acrylic layer jewelery that draw on motifs of childhood and fairy tales.

Tips on how to wear your pieces?

I believe any outfit, no matter what it is, is best paired with confidence. My pieces are large statements- they don't hide! I've worn mine in punk rock influence outfits, goth influence and even pop style colour outfits as well! Its all about the statement you want to make, and how confident you are in pulling it off. For the larger pendants, wear them on a long chain or ribbon, and have them swing freely. See La Roux in her film clip, Bulletproof. The gold portrait is rather similar to one of my designs, and she pulls it off wonderfully with a funky, eighties influence outfit. As the pieces are all black and white, they can be mixed with almost anything!

Favourite designer?

My favourite jewelery designer is Ted Noten. His works are fantastic! The Lady K Bags, which are resin handbags with items like working guns, diamonds and even rats cast into them, are such an inspiration. He also looks at communicating a story or character through the work- sometimes fictional, and sometimes through the wearer.

Where can we buy your jewellery?

I sell my jewelery at Gorman House Markets on Saturdays. After Christmas I hope to be down at the South Coast, so I'll be selling at the Moruya Markets (about half an hour from Batemans Bay) for a few weeks, then back here at Gorman House once more. I also sell continuously on my Etsy store, under Danielle Kathleen.

Danni also has a blog which is definitely worth checking out, or you can become a fan on facebook.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3146964349046405045.post-70926976124556070352009-11-26T21:23:00.000+11:002009-11-26T22:27:39.423+11:00Video MeLike JJ on Skins S3, I occasionally get ‘locked on’ to something, and at the moment it is Beyonce’s ‘Video Phone’ film clip. I can’t log on to a computer without Youtubing it, and I actually sat watching it over and over the other night for AN HOUR before I realised the time. She manages to be incredibly sexy as well as fashion forward, which is a difficult thing to accomplish – her outfits include a military-style leotard/jacket with square shoulder pads, a skin coloured silicone bra, bangles stacked to the elbow, sequinned high-waisted shorts (which I REALLY REALLY WANT) and various jumpsuits with matching evening gloves. The remix features Lady Gaga. And none of the men have faces.

Another of my current favourites is Lady Gaga's 'Bad Romance' clip. It appears to be set in a mental asylum, which is fitting considering that she may actually be insane. But I love that she wears whatever weird shit she wants without trying to be sexy - including those terrifying-but-somehow-desirable Alexander McQueen 'Armadillo' heels.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzJrWh5Fse3-YEIoWa1jB3ARQ8kkePZOZTy526T_dgWbwB5lZEoaERD3zap6BLvfUboDggCmBjrgxX7qbXLe1_b_OSbs30Q08l1SP9a7pD86XsiFOu0lMroBRF_jIB7cs5I7ovkmV7wZU/s320/alexander+mcqueen+armadillo+shoes.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5408365363759322002" />

If you like stylish boys (and who doesn't?) check out Kid Cudi's 'Make Her Say' clip, featuring Kanye West and Common. Kanye DOES appear to be wearing horrid yellow hiking boots (seems he can't do anything right lately) but Cudi's clubmasters and trilby more than compensate. Plus the direction is superb!

And I just realised that Lady Gaga is somehow involved in ALL of those videos!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3146964349046405045.post-63804993489900214512009-11-08T23:55:00.000+11:002009-11-09T11:00:18.467+11:00<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 211px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHAlY7C4elV5t3h1uALNfJgUHjEQRu1pSIZgCJ9XPIwzJAyeZ_jYl0GPIUcEIVTHtgV8H7ppePP4pb9CECRRT1dRE5Z76MkZwioclEe9flru9L3-bfIW-XiunIBewIKpWDzhquOCQ0iEU/s320/dolce+and+gabbana+campaign.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401886151595762178" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZSXMsJEgmK_M7kdAPdrpUEYJ1m3uQMBrqdLgBeIHVvSKRpb0WkSdvZkf3MGROWwnoQRnqYmU-XjJ3sjs_35yA_YgwCRdfqs76-y5mu4s5XudLJshwUs_PLnlNrNIE6FpV780QNY9VVmk/s320/skins+twins.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401717106180807266" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 213px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC8T-yHBjSTsf5H4L-NkWVFC3Hu4pfidFnxd1xEB7JwkaozFa8IFNmxv7_5oN-S_h4zkahhuDQ55XrouN5UT8kjDV54DhJqBlyj78SyOTHx57IM74l4E4fUdX4KwyqfjHhU3_-UlyVt0U/s320/matching+the+sartorialist.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401717102050928578" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_hHH87UYF-Ln77vM1SZZr8RWQI181BZ20ozw-yQrvw3HDv_awKsylc-MqNrVPuZZPPYAHVs9Q_IMPakUsRrDYX2sb9Aq4s6h0GVYoUqj4n4SIzS3b4-bul6fJn4T1Rsz1gLLHwPirM-8/s320/Harajuku-Pair-Look-Girls-09-2009-001-b.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401717098175338834" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 251px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOe4e9rKN5Gamp1YCUzYTac2sdFO7ea082kCD1SGdOFdNW6TnSm8hbkOh-7NdtXoLhYAqasU1rs7k2m_0xzHouG_k4aTSKr8TldQ5QLcseBLaN-VOJuzGZXVyXyUPip_NoRGgGX1aAGSg/s320/harajuku2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401717093733184978" />

Images: Dolce and Gabbana fall/winter 09 campaign, Skins twins, harajuku girls, matching stripes, pink harajuku girlsUnknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3146964349046405045.post-57360195764953809382009-11-08T23:52:00.000+11:002009-11-09T00:12:05.338+11:00Matchy-MatchyIn a tale of questionable authenticity, Anna Wintour coldly deemed a woman ‘matchy-matchy’ when she appeared in her office wearing a supremely coordinated outfit. I started thinking about this when I rocked up to the library the other day to find that I was wearing exactly the same basic grey tank as my best friend. Same brand and everything. Now, I don’t really care about that kind of thing, and it was barely noticeable since it was a basic. But then I was studying at a local cafe today (I’m such a party girl) and I realised that my pale pink blazer, laptop, and glomesh purse were all exactly the same colour. A little scary.

So, how matchy is too matchy?

It’s a difficult question, because it seems you’re damned if you do, and damned if you don’t. Harajuku girls often match each other and personally, I love it. Plus I’ve noticed that guys love this kind of thing – it seems to tap into that whole ‘twin fetish’ thing that I will never understand. I think it’s pretty rare to be able to pull this off if you’re not a Harajuku girl. That said, I really like the idea of matching with your friends and I’ve occasionally tried to convince my friends to do this, only to be brutally rebuffed. You would need to make sure that you matched completely, because if it looks accidental the impact is lost, and depending on where you’re going, that could be embarrassing. But if you think you can do it, knock yourself out (and call me if you need someone to do it with!).

As for matching clothes and accessories in an individual outfit, my only strict policy would be to NEVER wear all one colour, unless it’s black. Even if it’s different shades, you look obsessive. There are a couple of exceptions, like awesome, ironic onesies and the occasional power suit. But even then, you should try to break it up with shoes and accessories of different shades.

Other than that, denim-on-denim is rarely a good idea, nor is matching animal prints (we’ve all seen a woman clad entirely in leopard print during our lives and it’s not a pretty sight).

Charlotte York: “Imagine being blind and not being able to see a beautiful day like today. Can you think of anything worse?”
Anthony Marentino: “Stonewashed jeans and a matching jacket.”
- From Sex and the City episode ‘Let There Be Light’Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3146964349046405045.post-71765742051905651162009-11-08T23:30:00.000+11:002009-11-08T23:48:19.830+11:00Procrastination...One thing I like to do when I’m not doing what I should be doing is browse images on the web. I’ve only recently discovered We Heart It, which houses a beautiful array of inspirational images, with more added every day. And one person who never fails to produce a good image and an interesting outfit is Lady Gaga. I don't particularly like her music but I love her outrageous style (except the kermit and birds nest fiascoes). It's that time of year again - exam time - when you just roll out of bed and into the library, wearing a mish-mash of the semi-clean clothes you found on your bedroom floor, yesterday's make-up, and quite often a hat because you haven't had time to wash your hair... Understandably, statements like this have industry officials and women everywhere up in arms, and only serve to fuel the vilification of the fashion industry that often goes along with the issue of body image.

On Tuesday, model Sarah Murdoch and former Cosmopolitan magazine editor Mia Freedman presented a report to the government on the issue of body image, which recommended the implementation of a set of voluntary guidelines for the fashion industry, media and advertising. The ‘Industry Code of Conduct’ calls on magazines and advertisers to use ‘healthy weight’ models of different body shapes and ethnicities, and to disclose when images have been airbrushed or digitally altered. If the voluntary guidelines are largely ignored, they will be made mandatory (which throws into question whether they are, in fact, really voluntary at all).

It’s clear that body image is an important issue for young women, with it ranked as the number one concern in Mission Australia’s National Survey of Young Australians in 2007, and third in 2008. However I think the fashion industry is often used as a scapegoat for an issue that is much more complex. It is clear to most, I believe, that the runways are a realm of fantasy. It is true that the models are usually so tall and thin and beautiful that most of us could never look like them – but they’re also wearing clothes that most of us could never afford, and photographed in places and situations completely divorced from everyday life. I’ve read Vogue on and off since the age of twelve, and in the same way that I always understood I couldn’t afford a Vivienne Westwood bridal gown, I understood I couldn’t look like the model wearing it.

More problematic, I believe, are magazines, media and advertising – including celebrity culture – which present impossibly beautiful and thin women in ‘everyday’ situations, which are intended to be comparable to the lives of ordinary women. One such magazine is Cosmopolitan, which is why I find it incredibly ironic that it is former editor Mia Freedman who has put forward this report.

A question that arises regarding these guidelines is where to draw the line. If magazines are forced to disclose when the images have been airbrushed, shouldn’t they also disclose all the other unnatural processes the model or celebrity has gone through to look as beautiful as they do? A cover girl might not have been airbrushed, but she may have had botox, teeth whitening, breast enhancement, fake tanning, liposuction... the list goes on. Airbrushing is just the tip of the iceberg.

Here’s a novel idea: if we want women to feel good about themselves, why don’t we stop talking about their bodies? After all, it is a media-driven obsession with feminine beauty and sex appeal that got us into this mess in the first place. Dictating any kind of standards relating to the way women are presented in the media, even with the best of intentions, only adds another layer of expectation and pressure for women. Presenting ‘real women’ can set up a direct and damning comparison between the beautiful and the unfortunate, the slim and the voluptuous. And I don’t mean that it’s necessarily damning to the overweight and ugly – I have naturally slender friends who are abused and criticised by strangers, called ‘ano bitch’ and told to ‘eat something’. The fact that strangers feel they have the right to judge and comment on women’s bodies says a lot more about our society than fashion magazines do.

Human nature dictates that people will always give preference to things that they find beautiful or visually appealing. Whether or not women encounter beauty (and by modern standards this tends to encompass‘thinness’) in the media, they will inevitably encounter it in their everyday lives. There is always going to be someone prettier, taller, or slimmer, possibly with a smaller nose and bigger breasts. Instead of shielding young women from this reality, we need to equip them with strategies that enable them to value themselves regardless. Self esteem is such a complex issue – why don’t we look at things like bullying, parenting, role models, education, and community involvement?

Women need to realise that while Karl Lagerfeld might be a creative genius, we probably shouldn’t take dieting tips from a man who rumouredly survives solely on baby food. And even though Madonna is fantastically fit for her age, not all of us have the time or the inclination to exercise for six hours a day like she does! As I mentioned earlier, I’ve read fashion and beauty magazines for most of my life, and I think I’ve grown up with a fairly healthy sense of self esteem. I might not be able to afford that Vivienne Westwood wedding dress right now, but if I work hard at university and put a lot of time into my career (and use my brain), one day I might be able to. But even if I do get it, I’m never going to look like Kate Moss wearing it. And that’s ok by me.

“There is a moment when you have to accept that somebody else is younger and fresher and hotter. Life is not a beauty contest.”
- Karl Lagerfeld (he can be wise sometimes!)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3146964349046405045.post-39845535424348525202009-10-30T00:24:00.000+11:002009-10-30T00:31:23.244+11:00Movemberrrrr<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 235px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmchQihQ9JtPtg4X0ulGuc5ZmWNKmsMxHOonmaTeYk1-9SY-690OyVBRwgpSqRBe6G2iKTjCYzjz0C3wr7GxWPQQmGUnirgaz-AjyRitcSafz6ekVK3laNy7pqJ4ILzazBneGOfNoxVtc/s320/freddie_mercury.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5398013950702107346" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 254px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiePM_IYlWtise2KpnOUZJ9iA-c0z9b1w1-v7hgXMo6vwRSS-v4kuF278bMoB_JTyza5a1rmXXEqz2Wqa_yC3aLTaz0083iA2iiYfLdLwDvIedMmcCfyOrBOKkYFPQUZBsmbkIvoccuzI8/s320/brad_pitt_blueflys_blog_flypaper_1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5398013945514917458" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2O6-2unatOjOxN-ug4YLunL8m2Yu7TUoZVpHL9dn0AQyuFnOIC0eax0o4LxwdouRn5Pb5W0aZ5r9A6W3EweRvDaPj4g5YvT9UcP_fu8hPKM69lcj1u7YhiaQecJXBGyrHnltef2my7Js/s320/art2bx.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5398013941503108978" />
I am obsessed with moustaches. Here's what he said in the Seinfeld ep 'The Sponge':

"I have a friend, wears eyeglasses, no prescription in the glasses because he thinks it makes him look more intelligent. Now why? Why do we think that glasses makes us look more intelligent? Is it from the endless hours of reading and studying and researching that this person supposedly blew out their eyeballs, and that's why they need the glasses? It's just a corrective device. If you see someone with a hearing aid, you don't think, 'Oh, they must have been listening real good...yeah, to a lot of important stuff...' No, they are deaf. Kate has amazing 1950s style and I’m a bit more eclectic, so we parted ways, myself with strict instructions not to find her anything that was fluoro or shoulder-padded, and Kate with strict instructions to find me exactly those things. Sadly, most of what I wanted was a little above and beyond my student budget, but it was worthwhile going along just to see so many beautiful, unique clothes in one place. One of my favourite stalls housed a selection of vintage hats, sourced from places like Paris, New York and Italy – perfect for spring racing.

My ‘must have’ piece was a pair of Ray-Bans from the early 90s, trimmed with LIZARD SKIN! However, on enquiry about the price, I realised that it was a choice between those and re-registering my car. So in the end they were a ‘can’t have’ piece. Still kind of regret that. I could have got the bus.

The fair is only on until the end of the weekend, so you’d better get down to the Albert Hall quick smart! Entry is $12, but it’s well worth it. If you can’t make it this time, make a note in your diary for the next one, scheduled for 16, 17 and 18 July 2010.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3146964349046405045.post-52232763200090128302009-10-23T12:03:00.000+11:002009-10-23T12:17:49.515+11:00Peppermint<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNR4EczHDAJkS7OWuXzTdbMQh31b3nvSsghWCmA89Aeu6cI1XWFh3Ez9EBEMFzEECtYOAPL9cuB4F60hUW_mu4-Q33eo2k-tykY_Ly12KhXnr58U64M4P8CqBBQAHEmCWHYMXxVv0oeZI/s320/more+peppermint+005.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5395596276606402082" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAPeE7-_9zUpCQLKFDuJyDadCJv6Dh-oZ28IX5wA5CA4G9V7rDzU4mvU2M_tvA-hhzpz1ROR0WfM-8COQ8F0QQ0y6KSq2d-08H4YbXzUVDSbPS2z9m7XYbsHG6gI3AyE8GNdirTaKsp5s/s320/more+peppermint+002.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5395596269841813906" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijGSITNMjTGn-p0XfEFqfjwDp5GA0z3vmOsIfARKkj2OxndewWE9voY_Cg9p_q4uK5F4cvexREjW2WseXhWG7spSgOPS1hyphenhyphenEiQm7G3bVQeY3Iu1IFIqpDxYJgsv4IRT8ek7g0KRL6Jwq0/s320/re-loved+and+peppermint+026.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5395596267795109794" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8PYIHeJ_KIvp2uAUgMVy9lGhiDkBpyDuc2e6t9iKklm4dnNGJDbjYX6alrcLxqZQx0nW1OX9kANiiOSuNBLgsZ4plef6cgM2dQdb9byhbF39w-OUJnYny9rqzcFXKjpWGngr2HFX_oPw/s320/re-loved+and+peppermint+020.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5395596256938796210" />
For all you eco-friendly fashionistas (and that should be all of you!), check out this oh-so-cute independent offering. Peppermint is Australia’s first eco fashion magazine, and it’s even printed on 100% recycled paper. Anyone who has opened Vogue or walked past Cue recently would have realised that shoulder pads are back – and in a big way. They’ve cropped up in the collections of everyone from Balmain to Balenciaga, and Rihanna, Victoria Beckham, Lady Gaga and the late, great Michael Jackson have all jumped on the bandwagon. So, what the fuck is the big (shoulder) deal?

Well, the beauty of the shoulder pad is its ability to transform the body. In the wise words of my friend Ang, ‘the bigger the shoulder pads, the smaller everything else’. Few other styles can create instant curves, and even in their subtlest form, shoulder pads will make any waist look tiny. They are the new corset, minus the internal bruising, broken ribs and restricted breathing. What’s not to like?

And honey, they don’t call it the ‘power shoulder’ for nuthin’. A nod to the excesses of the 80s, the new big shoulders can be worn with a hint of irony, or with sincere, hands-clasped, tears-in-your-eyes, ground-kissing R-E-S-P-E-C-T (I’m in the latter category). Either way, they offer a welcome respite from recession induced seriousness, and there’s something about taking up a little more room in the lift that makes you feel like a million bucks.

I still haven’t plucked up the courage to wear my largest pair to Mooseheads, but since they’re en vogue, I’m sure some of you will. I can just imagine the pick-up lines. My, what big shoulders you have. All the better to... And where the rest of that conversation goes is entirely up to you.

“Remember that always dressing in understated good taste is the same as playing dead.”
- Susan CatherineUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3146964349046405045.post-27108285461842661632009-10-20T02:10:00.000+11:002009-10-20T02:12:27.643+11:00<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 212px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQExiSu9uW2JLFDl8lB_fSM3ZOUd1VyDQsfeyL4SQU_LQrwDQWvP9F-0Lu7KLiQfB8J5c-mkmvgfHM5hcIUjJVLr7rJgr1w_aWYFDXlH85fLebecErh2vNgJhVEJzIP1YYjMteZHhFkoc/s320/Yigal+Azrou%C3%ABl+nerd+glasses.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5394329110885912498" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizhedwAlJHs-dv6r4COeJHazAPJqFDJV9uGac0APEt0NqA1JSExCdSjf2aEGBLJCEtVrTKifUSbuBAxr-TeXA7A3NIwb_g55hLtV4Fu9HidSa_D42ecZtqcoPsRDKfOqCzjbYtlqm762Q/s320/keiko+lynn+in+nerd+glasses.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5394329102191644754" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 212px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEURgC2F9QNcEJaYGR0rDX6Xrf4g4AsbFVv5Oz1lXTRxma0jJd_zeOZmtfBbIJutOvz2ocjFeq8rJYvcfb5F4X9iDWArgAnOAiq-lvvCQWQiWiril5F_O9vKMcLWFrk1o3-NKQ5fLqJA8/s320/jay+z+glasses.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5394329094732291858" />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3146964349046405045.post-20586666078136786372009-10-20T02:06:00.000+11:002009-10-20T02:17:33.429+11:00Through the Looking Glass(es)To wear fake nerdy glasses or not to wear fake nerdy glasses? I’m so torn about this issue that I may start spouting soliloquies. Yigal Azrouël’s runway models donned them all the way back in 2007, and since then they’ve been spotted on the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Jay Z, Lady Gaga and style blogger Keiko Lynn. Now they’ve hit Sportsgirl and Jay Jays, and it’s clear the trend is in full swing.

However, there is something about fake glasses – the oversized, thick-rimmed, Buddy Holly-style ones – that I just cannot come to terms with. A friend pointed out, quite rightly, that they are no different to any other functionless fashion accessory. I wear headbands, don’t I? Earrings? High heels? When I rang another friend for an opinion, her stance on the issue was summed up by the response ‘I’m actually wearing a pair right now’. But to me, it is the same as wearing sunglasses inside, the eyewear equivalent of a naked dress – eye-catching, obvious, and just a little bit OTT.

I think it’s something to do with pretending to be something you’re not. If you’re a geek, you’re a geek, and I respect that. Wear your thick lenses with pride. But if you’re a fashionista pretending to be a geek, that’s a different story altogether – it’s not ironic or tongue-in-cheek, it’s kind of condescending.

But am I taking it all too seriously? Is fashion, like beauty, only skin deep? I wanna know what you think, about fake geek glasses or anything else. Email me at kingsandquinns@gmail.com.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
